LeakVISION
Estimates for the cost of gas leakage and network shrinkage vary wildly, with estimates between £30 million and £130 million depending on gas prices. Regardless of what the figure is, gas leakage represents and astronomical cost to GDNs, and consequently consumers. LeakVISION offers a proactive method for identifying leaks in large diameter gas pipes using thermal imaging, allowing for GDNs to effectively prioritize high risk infrastructure for repair.
Project Overview
LeakVISION is a project led by Synthotech and Northern Gas Networks, in consortium with a number of collaborators, including The EIC, ROSEN, The Technology Partnership, The University of Leeds, iTouch Reporting Systems, National Gas Transmission, Digital Catapult, DNV, and Cadent Gas. LeakVISION aims to create a “no dig” alternative to above ground bar holing, with the added benefits of more accurate, faster, less manpower intensive leak location.
How does LeakVISION Work?
LeakVISION uses advanced thermal imaging and data visualization to survey, identify and locate leaks in large diameter gas pipes from the inside, while the main remains pressurised and in service. Using our Synthotrax platform, the robot is able to navigate complex and challenging pipe conditions to achieve comprehensive surveying of networks.
What stage is the Project in?
LeakVISION reached the conclusion of the project in TRL7 with several field trials. We then undertook a SIF project and completed a discovery phase to examine business cases for the system, including pipe decommissioning, and assessment for hydrogen readiness. We also performed an alpha assessment and DNV Spadeadam to validate leak detection within hydrogen filled pipes. A beta testing and development stage were proposed, with expanded field trials, but the proposal was unsuccessful. At this stage LeakVISION is no longer being actively developed, but Synthotech are open to new partners on the project.
How can LeakVISION Support GDNs?
LeakVISION is perfect for use in conjunction with our advanced lead yarn joint leak repair solution, STASS. LeakVISION can be used to perform a comprehensive survey of a section of pipework, identify the presence of leaks in both joints and pipe walls, and STASS can be used to rectify leaking joints along the section of pipework.
